Geopark

We are very lucky to be located at the gateway to The Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Geoaprk. The Geoaprk covers an area of 530 square kms. It's boundary is marked to the West and North by the Atlantic Ocean, then runs South along the Clare county border to the village of Tubber and Westwards by the vilages of Corofin, Kilfenora, Lisdoonvarna and the Cliffs of Moher.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are internationally recognised places with unique geology, landscapes, history and culture. Geoparks are managed with a focus on education, conservation, sustainable tourism and community engagement. Geopark status is a UNESCO designation and is revalidated every 4 years.

Whatever your interest, from archaeology to adventure, from geology to botany, there is something at the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark that will stop you in your tracks. The best way to explore the Geopark is to take the time to sensitively wander – by foot or on a bicycle. Get up close to nature. Immerse yourself in rich heritage. Discover the local culture.

Taking care as you go brings huge rewards. By leaving the lightest possible mark on our landscape, the beautiful Burren will leave the most memorable mark on you.

The Burren Ecotourism Network is a multi-award winning network of members (local businesses from the Geopark) who follow the Geopark’s Code of Practice for Sustainable Tourism. Every two years, members of the network make their code submission where they report various aspects of their day-to-day business activities, such as waste, water, waste-water, energy, milage and much more. Using these stats, our system can intuitively calculate the businesses’ carbon footprint and it can determine whether the business has improved on their social, economic and environmental efforts since their previous submission. Being a member of The Burren Ecotourism Network means being a part of strong community of co-existing businesses who support one another, share various resources and have a common focus on a more sustainable future for The Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark.
